You can join them. Read on to discover how. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, it's an opportunity and a career path. If you have the desire, the willingness to invest some time, and motivation, you can join the thousands of bloggers around the world enjoying blogging success. You can start with what you know, and build from there.
Blog: you're the boss
How did you get to work this morning? If you're a commuter, you took a train or a bus, or you drove. No matter how great you felt when you left home, I'll bet your commute did a lot to sour your mood. If you hit traffic snarls, you arrived at work stressed. And all before your working day officially started.
Blogging means that you're your own boss, and although the biggest benefit may be that you can't get fired, the NO COMMUTE benefit comes a close second. Your commute probably takes half a minute as you stroll from the kitchen, steaming coffee cup in hand, to your home office.
A blog is the fastest, cheapest way to build your own business, and to make a six-figure income. How cheap? Free. If you use Blogger.com as your blogging platform when you start, building your own Internet business is completely free – aside from whatever you're paying for Internet access.
Here's what a CNN Money article said about the rapid rise of blogs as viable businesses: "They are so cheap to create and operate that a lone blogger or a small team can, with the ever-expanding reach of the Internet, amass vast audiences and generate levels of profit on a per-employee basis that traditional media companies can only fantasize about."
When you start your blogging business, you've got two business models to follow: career blogging, where you blog for business for pay; and entrepreneurial blogging, where you monetize your blog - or more commonly, blogs. More on these two models later.
Don't get a job: get a blog
We've got a tiny library in the small Sydney suburb I live in. It's a little sub-library, an outstation of a much larger library in a bigger suburb around five miles away. Tiny as this library is, it's got six computers, and they're always busy. I'm a snoop, so I often stroll past the computer stations to see what people are accessing online. Usually it's email. My guest is that most of the people emailing from the library in the middle of the day are job hunting.
They should be making their own jobs; after all, they're sitting at a computer. I want to say to this people (I've thought about leaving a flyer): Look, get a blog – make your own job, and within a couple of months you can buy your own computer. Tap the keys at home, with a beverage at your elbow, and music on the stereo.
If these people can use a computer at the library, they can make enough to own a computer very quickly and create a good income almost as quickly. So can you.
This ebook is about how to make money blogging, and I do mean, make money. In our first chapter, we'll going to look at setting some financial goals for your blogging activities, and I want you to take the goal-setting seriously. Please set goals. You'll achieve them, I promise you. If you get stuck, contact me on the blog http://www.dollars2blog.com/blog/ -- I want everyone who buys this book to know that this was the best investment in their future that they've ever made.
Let's look at how you can make money blogging. There are two primary ways.
Two ways to make money blogging
1. Get hired by companies to blog: "career blogging", or freelance blogging
2. Create your own blogs and monetize them: "entrepreneurial blogging"
As I write this, in September of 2006, blogging has become an industry, and a very lucrative one. If you have curiosity, energy and a basic understanding of how the Web works, you can become a career blogger-for-hire today, earning around $4000 USD a month, for a couple of hours of work each weekday. Companies pay this kind of fee for you to blog.
On the other hand, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, and want to develop your own blog empire, you can earn a six-figure income, pulling in around $10,000 a month for a blog which gets good traffic.
What's best, blogging for yourself or for a company? That depends on your situation. Many bloggers start by blogging for others, then when they see that there's money to be made in blogging, they develop their own blogs, and become blog entrepreneurs.
Who needs bloggers? Lots of companies
There are a number of reasons for this exploding demand for business bloggers. The primary reasons:
• Super-charging of global business. Business is becoming truly global. Managing their global workforce is much easier for companies with blogs. At last count, Microsoft.com had around 3000 bloggers;
• Web 2.0 – all their customers are online, so businesses need to be online to monitor the conversations. A blog lets them monitor what's being said about them, and also to guide the conversations. Only by blogging can companies keep up with competitors and stay relevant;
• Billions of dollars' worth of online advertising – that advertising needs somewhere to be visible: it needs eyeballs – blogs provide those eyeballs;
• Intense competition online for attention;
• The development of thin-slicing of markets – it's no longer enough for businesses to aim to get the attention of a large demographic, the more targeted a company's message, the more effective it is;
• More media companies are moving online;
• There's a flood of new companies "Web 2.0" starting up. Many of these companies understand how the Web works, and they know that a blog is the easiest and fastest way to get and hold attention.
I could go on for pages about "why businesses need bloggers, and why now". But you get the picture. Blogging is very cost-effective and efficient for businesses. For a tiny investment, they can get huge and on-going returns.
Companies are realizing that blogging is a must. It helps them to grab hold of the management of their reputation, and gives them a way to head off negative media attention. And of course, it helps them to attract new customers and keep current customers.
Enough of the chatter about why blogs are hot. You want to know what it means for you. Can YOU make money blogging? Yes, you can. Even if you're not a blog reader – big hint, if you're not reading blogs, start today – it won't take you long to get up to speed to get blogging, and get earning.
